Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA)

In August 2008, President Bush signed into law the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA), which requires manufacturers of domestic and imported children’s products, including books and other printed products, to test and certify their products to ensure they meet specific lead and phthalate (e.g., plasticizers that could be found in inks, coatings, and adhesives) content limits established by the CPSIA.

January 2010 Updates.  A positive change for the printing industry is the stay for another year of testing and certification.  Here is a summary of the latest updates.

Printing Industries of America released a summary about CPSIA in October.

July and August 2009 Updates: Important information on exemptions and information on tracking labels.  Check them out on the CPSIA page.

Since CPSIA was signed into law, there have been several key changes.  Printing Industries of America released information on what you should do next.

If you produce books or other materials intended for children, you should also check out the information on our website to determine if or how you will be affected.
